Comments on Year-Round Schooling

Tuesday night the new school board candidates continued their campaigning; only this time their target was the senior citizens at the Lenior Retirement Community. The senior citizens main concern was for changes the candidates would enact, the rumored teacher unionization, and the thoughts on year- round schooling.
Candidate Henry Lane said because of the budget problems and the increase and overcrowding of students, he believed that year-round schooling should start immediately. That way there would be less students crowding the halls at the same time.
Candidate Elton Fray disagreed with Lane. He believed that, not only would the cost of educating the children go up, but that it would not be a good idea to change the students' entire schedule.
I find myself agreeing with Fray. Not only would costs for schooling rise (the parents would have a fit), but it wouldn't be a good idea to uproot schedules when students have been with them all their lives, and know how they work. I also think that many students would outright object and rebel against the thought. And with the kids angry and taking it out on the parents there may be even more uprising.
And even though i can understand why 30 states are now practicing year-round schooling it still bothers me that they haven't thought about the effect it could have on the students. They think that just because students get a number of small breaks instead of summer, and still only have 180 days of school, that they won't be burnt out.
The school board is saying that they don't wish to erect additional buildings for the students so that they can cut construction costs. My question is are they just being stingy or do they not have the money and why?
And if the answer is that they don't have the money to build new buildings, why on earth would Candidate Larry Dorman say that he would like to focus on increasing teacher pay?
Incumbant Kerry Corino finished with saying, "The teachers are anti-union, that should tell you a lot of things about how this city operates."
That's funny, because she also said that it is state law that teachers cannot join unions. I wonder if they would, if they were aloud to.
