
Arson is suspected to have killed 15 horses at the Lincoln Downs Race Track in Springfield.
According to fire chief Bernard Perry, flames were shooting out of the center of the barn by the time the authorities arrived on the scene. Assistant general manager of the track, Dan Bucci, pointed out that the problem with flames coming from the center of the building is that all heaters and electrical outlets were in the tack rooms at the ends of the barn.
The two story, wooden structure stabled 25 horses, 15 of which did not survive. Among the 15 being Star 8, a purebred Arabian owned by millioniar Micheal Jones, who was predicted to wipe out the competition this year.
In addition 2 horses were found in acute distress.
Jockey Albert Ramos, from Miami, Florida, commented while watching the surviving horses. “Those horses are my best friends. I love horses more than I do people. I feel like I want to cry.”
